Steeve Lecru explores the memory contained
inside of discarded couches in the urban landscape of Detroit. This essential
artifact of the home, site of familial expression, letting go, and rest,
carries traces of past events colored by the city’s violent and controversial
history. When left in a public area, this family relic is transformed into a
symbol of abandonment, absence, flight. The process of recovering the leather
is an intense and physical experience, evoking an image of social violence. Lecru’s
work appeases the tension of the memories living in the material through
therapeutic brushstrokes, transforming the past into tender homage.
